Ice Dam Removal and Prevention

Ice dams and frozen areas on your roof have the potential to cause extreme damage to both your roof and the inside of your home.   Being aware of possible ice dams and taking the proper steps to protect your home could save you tens of thousands of dollars or more.

Ice dams on roofs form when accumulated snow on a sloping roof melts and flows down the roof, under the insulating blanket of snow.  The ice will melt and re-freeze throughout the winter, and can lead to water damage to both the interior and exterior of your home.

What is an ice dam?

Ice damdams form when melting snow and ice re-freeze at the edge or valleys of your roof line.  As the melting snow accumulates, the ice dam may grow large enough to prevent water and debris from draining off the roof.  The water from the melting ice can end up pooling and leaking back through your shingles and into your home.

The melting of roof snow comes from two reasons:

  1. Inadequate roof insulation, heat leaks, and inadequate ventilation.  This allows heat conducted through the roof to melt snow on those areas of the roof that are above heated living spaces.
  2. The normal freeze and thaw cycle melts snow on warm or sunny days, and this snow melt continues to run down the roof and freeze again when it becomes cold.

The ice dam is created at the edge of your roof where no heat is conducted, which is typically on the roofs overhang.

Dealing with existing Ice Dams

Ice dams should not be removed by breaking the ice into small chunks.  This method may damage your shingles, gutters and even downspouts.  Even if done very carefully, the granules on your shingles can be warn aware and could cause bare spots on your roof if removed with a hammer or blunt object.
